My favorite five songs of the week including Twenty-One Pilots, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, The Black Keys, JR JR and P!nk.
My favorite part about having a blog is discussing music. I love music, and while my justifications for enjoying a song are ridiculous, it’s still fun to write. I also decided to limit myself to three songs was too restrictive so now each week I will list as many songs as I’d like!
Twenty-One Pilots – Ride: A year ago, our daughter’s babysitter tried selling us tickets to Twenty-One Pilots, and I had no idea who they were. At that moment, I realized I was old and not hip with music anymore. Fast forward to three months and I heard Twenty-One Pilots on the radio and immediately loved them. I’m now the old person who is clinging to their youth, or I’m awesome and can relate to high schoolers? It’s hard to say, but I’m disappointed I didn’t take the tickets because I hear they are amazing live.
I love that they have so many different styles and each song I hear I enjoy more than the previous song. I realize Ride has been on the radio for a while, but I can’t get enough of the song. It has a great reggae vibe and is the perfect song for the summer!
Favorite Lyrics: “All these questions they’re for real. Like who would you live for? Who would you die for? And would you ever kill?“ A lot of questions thrown at me in one song that I’ve never considered. It reminds me of who would you marry, shag, and kill game?
Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats – S.O.B: The first few times I heard this song I was confused and thought it was an old song because the lead singer has a soulful voice. When I kept hearing it on the radio, I realized it’s newer and this song makes me happy every time I hear it. I enjoy how the lyric “son of a bitch” is not censored on the radio. I had never heard of Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats before this song, but I read several reviews explaining how they are electrifying on stage. Their music takes me back to another time in life, but I can’t pinpoint when. I’ve also listened to a few of their other songs, and I’m a fan. Son of a bitch, they are awesome!
Favorite Lyric: “Son of a bitch, Give me a drink.” I’m pretty sure this song is about an alcoholic getting sober or at least discussing the sober life, but every time I hear this lyric, I want a drink or to give him a drink. It’s a simple but great song, and I can’t get enough!
JR JR – Gone: I don’t know how someone could hear this song and not instantly feel happy. I love a song with good lyrics, and this song delivers in the lyrics department. Some people think the song is about suicide while others feel it’s about living your life. I could see both or throw another theory into the meaning of the lyrics. Perhaps, the song is telling us not to care about what others think and to live your life without a care in the world. Regardless, this song is catchy and is a good pick me up song. Although, the video is weird!
Favorite Lyric: “I can’t be everything you want me to be.” We will never live up to anyone’s expectation of us, so I enjoy the honesty of this lyric.
The Black Keys – Lonely Girl: This song is older, but it’s great. I wouldn’t consider myself a Black Keys fan but this song kind of remind me of a ZZ Top song at the beginning. Like, Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats, this song takes me to another time in music, and I once again can’t pinpoint it, maybe the 80’s? It doesn’t matter cause it rocks my life currently. Also, the music video is amazing, and I love the guy dancing!
Favorite Lyric: “So you tore my heart out, and I don’t mind bleeding.” I’m not sure why I love this line, but I’m drawn to the idea someone could be so heartbroken they can only describe the feeling of their heart being torn and being numb to the pain to the point where they don’t care. I’m so glad I’ve never felt this way after a breakup!
P!nk – Just Like Fire: Confession, I’ve loved Pink since the beginning of her career when she sported Pink hair! I can’t remember the last time she’s had a song on the radio which is an indication it has been too long. The first time I heard this song I was hooked. It’s catchy, and if I were a runner, I would throw it on a playlist cause it makes me want to run hard or grab some gloves and go crazy on a punching bag. It pumps me up! This song is for the upcoming movie”Alice Through the Looking Glass” so the Mad Hatter aspect of the video is slightly creepy but I’m also impressed with her acrobatic skills.
Favorite Lyric: “No one can be just like me anyway.” Valid point!
