My favorite songs of the week including Fitz and the Tantrums, Lumineers, Goo Goo Dolls, Vance Joy and Lana Del Ray.
I’ve never been passionate about anything in life except for music. I love the way a song can make you feel or instantly take you back to another time in life. In college, my dream was to become a radio DJ because I like to talk, and I love music. However, I had my own radio show on our college radio station, and I realized it’s a lot harder than anticipated since I was talking to myself which I found to be awkward.
However, my love for music never went away even though my dreams of being a radio DJ quickly faded. I love discovering new artists, songs, and attending concerts. So every week I will share songs, albums, or artists I’m am listening to. They may be new songs, popular songs, or a ridiculous throwback. In return, I’d love to hear what songs you’re into at the moment! I love all types of music, so all suggestions are welcomed!
Fitz and the Tantrums – Handclap: I learned about this song while listening to one of the radio stations in San Diego. I recently downloaded the station’s app, and I listen to them in the morning. In the past week, this station has introduced me some great songs that I’ve yet to hear on Phoenix radio stations, Sirius XM, or Spotify, which are my go-to outlets for music. When my Monday morning kicked off with Handclap by Fitz and the Tantrums, I was pumped up. This song is catchy, upbeat, and has confirmed my love for the band. If you need a pick me up song, this is it!
Favorite Lyric: “Fear no conviction, grapes of wrath can only sweeten your wine.” I only like this lyric because I could go for a glass of wine right now.
Lumineers – Ophelia: I will admit I’ve never been a fan of the Lumineers, they are too slow for me and the “Hey, Ho” song is a little too repetitive. I recently heard “Ophelia”, and once I discovered it was the Lumineers, I decided to give them another chance. I’m not the type who can listen to songs on repeat but I can with Ophelia.
I love the piano solo at the beginning of the song and the lyrics. The song isn’t necessarily upbeat, but it’s catchy and has been stuck in my head for the past week. I’ve also been listening to other songs from their latest record titled Cleopatra and other noteworthy songs are “Where the Skies are Blue” and “Cleopatra”. While a lot of these songs are not my style and still too slow for me, I love good lyrics or a song that tells a story and the Lumineers have perfected this art which I can appreciate.
Favorite Lyric: “Oh, Ophelia, you’ve been on my mind girl like a drug. Oh, Ophelia, heaven help a fool who falls in love.” I’d like to think we’ve all made bad decisions in the dating world and fallen for someone who was completely wrong for us, and I believe this lyric explains that perfectly.
Goo Goo Dolls – So Alive: I’ve always loved the Goo Goo Dolls and for the longest time Slide was my absolute favorite song. By the way, do you know how hard it is for a music fanatic to pick an absolute favorite song? I will admit it’s random Slide would be my top choice, but I love the song. However, I’m not sure the pick would stand in 2016, but it holds a special spot in my heart.
This is awful, but I had completely forgotten about The Goo Goo Dolls until I heard “So Alive.” I love the piano solo at the beginning of this song, and I enjoy the lyrics to the song. Johnny Rzeznik has perfected catchy adult contemporary top 40 music, and So Alive is no exception to this. It’s the perfect blend of soft pop rock and I anticipate it cracking into the top 10 this Summer.
Favorite Quote: “Never gonna live if you’re too scared to die.” I can appreciate any song which makes me reflect on my own life. I’m a scaredy cat, so maybe I should take more chances in life and not be so afraid.
It was hard to narrow it down to three songs so here are a few other songs I also am listening to currently.
Vance Joy – Fire and the Flood: After watching this video, I want to run my hands through his curly hair, haha.
