A lot of Pop-Punk bands are reuniting and releasing new music. It felt necessary to discuss some of the great new music by Taking Back Sunday, Sum41, Blink182, Good Charlotte, and Yellowcard.
I’ve mentioned a few times how I enjoy Pop-Punk music and in my younger days it was my life. Nothing was better than attending punk rock show, I still have a lot of nostalgia for the music which is why the Summer of 2016 has kicked off on a fantastic note for me. This Summer has revived my love for the genre of music with some of my favorite pop-punk bands making new music.
This week we will be exploring new music by some throwback artists who have reunited
Taking Back Sunday- Tidal Wave:
This song is fantastic and reminds me of an old school punk song from the Ramones, Dropkick Murphy’s, or Anti-Flag. I can’t pinpoint it, but I love this sound. It’s unlike anything I’ve heard from Taking Back Sunday, and I love when a band can reinvent their sound. They’ve gotten away from that emo sound they had in the past, and I’m digging Tidal Wave.
Sum41- Fake My Own Death:
I loved Sum41’s debut cd All Killer, No Filler and Fat Lip was one of my fav songs of 2001. Throughout the years, they had some catchy tunes, but I was never a hardcore fan. Fake My Own Death was recently released and while the song is less pop-punk it pumps me up! Plus, the video is weird, you have to watch all the randomness of the video.
Yellowcard- Rest In Piece:
Yellowcard was on of the best pop punk bands in the 2000’s, and Ocean Avenue was hands down my favorite album of 2003. It was a cd that got me through rough times in life and is still one of the only records I’ve ever been able to listen to on repeat. Yellowcard has a great energy and a violin player which sets them apart from other pop punk bands. I listened to the cd’s that came out after Ocean Avenue but eventually moved on from the band. Yellowcard has returned with their farewell album. Rest In Peace is a low-key song and not the high energy sounds of Ocean Avenue but still catchy.
Good Charlotte- Life Changes:
I’ve always been a Good Charlotte fan, and while some of their music has been less than amazing, overall I’ve enjoyed their music. They are also one of my favorite Pop-Punk concerts I’ve attended. Granted, I saw them in 2002 when their self-titled cd Good Charlotte was released, but it was a fun time. They stepped away from the music scene but are back and so far I love all the songs I’ve heard from the new cd which goes on sale July 15th. You can listen to a sample of the new cd titled Youth Authority on Amazon. Life Changes reminds me of their older sound which is why I enjoy it so much.
Blin182- The Only Thing That Matters:
The is one of the most anticipated albums for Pop-Punk fans since Blink182 is a staple to the genre. A few weeks ago I admitted my love for the band. They are one of the groups that represent the high school version of myself since I loved them. I was a little skeptical when they announced a new cd without Tom Delong. Part of me was okay with the decision since I think Tom is whiny and crazy. However, Tom is a founding member, and it made me wonder how that would change Blink182. I also felt okay with the decision since they’ve replaced the drummer in the past to bring in Travis Barker, who I believe enhanced the band. It’s a new sound, but I don’t hate it, and I like the addition of Matt Skiba to the band.
The only thing that matters restores my love for Blink and reminds me of their older music which is all a blink182 fan can hope for at this point.
Throwback Song: Bands who should release new music!
Jimmy Eat World- Praise Chorus:
If I could have another throwback band create a new cd, it would be Jimmy Eat World. I love them, and Praise Chorus is one of my all-time favorite songs. It has a great riff, excellent lyrics, and the song comes together fantastic.
Something Corporate- Punk Rock Princess:
Something Corporate defines my youth, I’ve been a fan since the beginning, and Punk Rock Princess is a song that stands the test of time for me. Every time I hear the song it takes me back to the first time I saw them in concert, listened to the song, and bought the cd. Something Corporate was another band who I listened to during hard times in life and even though the band broke up a long time ago, the lead singer Andrew McMahon has moved on to other bands and success. However, my love for pop-punk, Andrew McMahon, and Something Corporate all started with Punk Rock Princess!
Sugarcult- Bouncing Off The Walls:
Sugarcult is the last band I feel, should reunite and give the fans some new music. I’ve loved them since the beginning and their debut cd Start Static is another cd that defines my late teen’s early twenties. I saw them open for Good Charlotte, and they rocked the venue. Start Static is a cd that has a few different sounds from the band, and each sound is great. It was hard to choose a favorite song, but I went with Bouncing Off The Walls because it’s a fun and catchy song which is Sugarcult in a nutshell.
What band of any genre of music do you want to reunite and make new music?
