If you are feeling overwhelmed by the stuff in your life, maybe it’s time for a change
Do you ever hold on to stuff in case you ever need it again? I’m notorious for holding on to items “just in case.” This year I’m focusing on minimalizing my life and asking myself “Does it currently serve a purpose in my life?” If the answer is “No” then I ask myself a follow-up question, “Am I holding on to the item for a “just in case” scenario?” If the answer is “yes” then I am getting rid of it. If I’m holding onto the item for sentimental value, then I will keep it.
It feels like a weight has been lifted, but it’s a double edge sword because this means parting with some sentimental items that no longer make sense to keep. Case in point, my maternity clothes, and my daughter’s crib. Realistically, the likelihood I have another kid is slim to none, and I have to let go of the possibility because my husband has assured me on a regular basis he is “One and done.” At this point, if I were pregnant it would be unexpected. It’s hard getting rid of stuff that holds meaning but keeping it knowing it will never be used is no longer practical.
The positive is that I’ve been selling the stuff I believe I can make money on and am using that money to treat ourselves to something nice, like a vacation in the future. I’m a work in progress, but this year I’m focused on minimalizing my life and re-thinking purchases and if the money I’m spending on a knick-knack can be saved to buy an experience that would make me happier than I’m saving my money.
What have you tried doing to minimalize your life? I’d love to know.
